Giraffes have been depicted in art and literature for centuries. They appear in Egyptian hieroglyphs, Greek and Roman writings, and Chinese art. Giraffes were also popular as exotic pets for royalty and wealthy individuals.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, giraffes were hunted for their meat, skins, and tendons. This hunting, combined with habitat loss, led to a decline in giraffe populations. Today, giraffes are listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
